Out of many tampita viharayas in Kandy district, only two are existing in the Udunuwara. They are Kumbaloluwa Tampita Viharaya and and Eladetta Minimarupitiya Tampita Viharaya.
Kumbaloluwa Tampita Viharaya lies in the Viharagama area in Gamhatha in Kandy district. A Tampita Viharaya is a structure built on a wooden platform which rests on number of stone stumps usually 3-4 feet tall. The roof is held by a structure built of timber and the walls are generally made of wattle and daub. Walls inside the chamber is more or less always covered in paintings drawn mainly in Kandyan style.
The ‘Nampotha’ of Kandyan period too mentions this temple indicting the importance it had during this period. The original viharaya is known as Bavus Lena and had existed to the east of the present viharaya. The Thudapatha recording in the history of the place refers to two brothers Kuruwa Ayanta, Deyantha of Kurunegala as responsible for its construction. The stone statues of the original viharaya has been later moved to the Tampita Viharaya at Galapitawatta. This had taken place during the time of king Rajadhi Rajasinghe (1781 – 1798).
To reach the temple, take to Gampola road from Peradeniya to reach Weligala and proceed along the Kaluwahalkada – Gamhatha road.
