The 4-meter-high Miniran Ella is a short yet wide waterfall along the Pimbura Ganga River, located in the Nikagoda GS Division of the Ayagama Divisional Secretariat in the Ratnapura District. Still hidden from mainstream travel routes, this charming cascade has preserved its natural beauty—untouched by man-made structures and unspoiled by litter.
Formed by a rock cliff spanning the river, the fall drops in a broad curtain of water. During light or moderate rains, the flow merges into a single graceful sheet, making the scene especially picturesque. In contrast, during drier periods, the water trickles down in scattered streams, while heavy rains create torrents that mask the fall’s elegance.
Miniran Ella can be reached along the Ayagama–Kukulegama Road. Traveling about 7.5 km from Ayagama town, you will pass the Primary Medical Care Unit at Paragala; the fall lies just 100 meters beyond this point. Since the river runs below the road and there is no defined path, visitors must walk through a few home gardens to access the cascade.
On-Site Safety and Etiquette
- Stay on marked paths: Straying from designated trails can be dangerous due to unstable ground, slippery rocks, and hidden hazards, and it helps protect the local ecosystem.
- Be conscious of the weather when bathing: Sudden flash floods can occur from rain upstream, so always monitor water levels.
- Check depth and currents before entering the water: If the site is empty, consult a local villager about safe bathing areas.
- Follow “Leave No Trace” principles: Take all your litter with you, including biodegradable waste such as fruit peels, which can harm wildlife.
- Respect local culture: When passing through villages, dress modestly and be mindful of customs.
- Be cautious with photography: Exercise care near cliffs and slippery rocks.
