Mutiyankattuwa Wewa Reservoir (Tamil: Muthuiyankaddu Kulam), situated in the Oddusuddan Divisional Secretariat Division, is one of the largest reservoirs in the Mullaitivu District, covering an area of approximately 11 square kilometres (2,700 acres). This archaeological site, located within the forest atop the reservoir, spans an area of about 2 acres with significant ruins.
The remains at this site include a dilapidated stupa, a shrine room, and the ruins of three buildings with stone pillars. According to the Department of Archaeology, this monastery complex dates back to the Anuradhapura period.
The stupa has a diameter of about 10 meters and its remaining structure rises approximately 2 meters high. The stupa is overgrown with large trees. To the northeast of the stupa, remnants of a brick floor can be seen. The northern and northeastern sides of the stupa still have visible segments of the Pesa Walalu (circular ring mouldings around the stupa). The area surrounding the stupa is littered with stone fragments and molding stones.
To the north of the stupa, there are remnants of a building with three stone pillars, each about 1 meter high. Approximately 10 meters to the south of this building, another structure with 11 stone pillars, about 80 centimetres tall, is found.
About 50 meters south of the stupa lies a building identified as a shrine room. This structure measures 10 meters in length and 6.5 meters in width. Inside, there are remnants of a destroyed standing Buddha statue, with the remaining fragment measuring about 60 centimetres in length and 45 centimetres in width. The statue, carved from limestone, still exhibits detailed drapery folds.
Approximately 20 meters south of the shrine room, there are ruins of another building with three remaining stone pillars, each around 80 centimetres tall.
To reach this archaeological site, one must travel 6 kilometres from the Oddusuddan stone quarry junction, turning left towards Mutiyankattuwa Wewa Reservoir (Tamil: Muthuiyankaddu Kulam). After traversing through Mutiyankattuwa farm for another 2 kilometres, and then proceeding about 500 meters towards the river embankment located near the training school, the site becomes accessible.
