Suspension bridges, or “hanging bridges” (Sangili Palama in Sinhala), are a distinctive and often picturesque feature of the Sri Lankan landscape, particularly in rural and scenic areas. While not as large as the massive suspension bridges found in other parts of the world, they are a vital part of the local infrastructure and have also become popular tourist attractions.

Nakkawita Sangili Palama (Suspension Bridge)

Many of Sri Lanka’s suspension bridges were constructed during the British colonial period. The Nakkawita Hanging Bridge, built across the Sitawaka Ganga River, was begun in 1819 and opened to the public in 1823. Its primary purpose was to transport tea produce from the Nakkawita and Maliboda areas to Deraniyagala.

This pedestrian-only bridge, considered the highest suspension bridge in the country, stands about 25 m (82 ft) above the river. Constructed using steel cables, it stretches approximately 85 m (279 ft) in length.

The “Moda Palama”

In later years, a low-level culvert bridge was built 200 m upstream to improve transportation. However, this bridge was frequently washed away during floods, earning it the nickname Moda Palama (“Fools Bridge”). Each time floodwaters rose, reliance on the hanging bridge increased, making it indispensable to Nakkawita residents. Over time, the bridge became a symbol of the village itself.

Renovations and preservation

Public demand ensured that the bridge received attention whenever it became dilapidated. Renovations were carried out at different times by the Central Cultural Fund, the Provincial Council, and the Pandeniya Village Development Society. The most recent restoration took place in 2023, marking the 100th anniversary of the bridge.

The Moda Palama motor bridge was eventually abandoned, replaced by a higher-elevation structure built just 25 m downstream. The washed-out remains of the old bridge are still visible today.

Route

From the Avissawella–Karawanella Road, turn onto Deraniyagala Road at Dehiowita. Travel 13.5 km to Deraniyagala town, then continue 4 km along Noori Road to reach the bridge.

Visitor information

Access to the bridge is free of charge, with no tickets required. Visiting in the morning or late afternoon is recommended, as the lighting is softer and the heat less intense. The bridge is open year-round, and since it is a pedestrian-only structure, it is safe for walking and photography. The nearby river and surrounding greenery offer excellent scenic views, making it a popular spot for both locals and travelers.
