Navodagama, also spelled Nawodagama, is located between Oyamaduwa and Thanthirimale in the Mahavilachchiya Divisional Secretariat Division of the Anuradhapura District. The Navodagama Archaeological Reserve is situated directly beside the Anuradhapura–Thanthirimale main road and features the well-preserved remains of a Tampita Vihara (a temple built on stone pillars), as well as the ruins of an ancient stupa. In addition, the site contains granite pillars from other ancient buildings, stone statues, and several other archaeological remnants.
The Department of Archaeology has officially designated this area as the Navodagama Archaeological Reserve, and conservation efforts have been undertaken. However, the site is rapidly being reclaimed by vegetation, threatening the visibility and preservation of these historic ruins.
Photographs taken by Dr. A.G. in January 2015 show the ruins still largely intact. Unfortunately, by December of the same year, the ruins of the Tampita Vihara had almost vanished under dense overgrowth, highlighting the urgent need for ongoing maintenance and protection.
