Nawinna Rajamaha Viharaya is one of the hundreds of ancient temples of the ancient Digamadulla Kindom which flourished from the time before Christ. Travelling 3 km from the Padiyathalawa town towards Mahaoya, the small name board of the temple will direct you to a narrow road to the left called Nawinna-Weerana Road. 1.8 km down this road lies the Ancient Temple of Nawinna.

The ruins of  this ancient viharaya have been declared a protected archaeological site by the Government with the Gazette issued on 26th December 2014, and describes the location as follows ;

“The two places with ruins of buildings and other archaeological evidence at Ancient Temple premises, Nawinna situated in Grama Niladhari Division No. 141/B, Unapana in the Divisional Secretary’s Division, Padiyathalawa in Ampara District in Eastern Province. (latitude 07º26´ 152´´ N and longitude 81º14´ 104´´ E).”
