The remains of a ruined stupa are located at a spot known as ‘Galwala’ within Neelapola village, which is in the Neelapola 217/B Grama Seva Division of the Serunuwara Divisional Secretariat, Trincomalee District. A private property is situated in front of this site.
To reach the location from the Kantale-Serunuwara road, turn at Kallar junction and follow the road through Dehiwatta to Neelapola. At Bogas junction, turn left for a short distance, then turn right. After another short distance, turn onto a road to your right and proceed for approximately 150 meters to find the site.
Unfortunately, due to nearby stone quarrying and treasure hunting, the stupa has been significantly damaged and is now reduced to a mere mound of earth. Bricks that were part of the stupa’s construction are scattered around the immediate area. The site is also littered with fragments of clay pots and roof tiles. Additionally, stone pillars from associated building constructions can be found in a nearby area covered by thick bushes or forest.
Based on its construction characteristics, it is believed that this stupa was originally built during the early Anuradhapura period. The Department of Archaeology has officially recognized this location as an archaeological monument.
