Ancient Niloluwa Bridge over Gurugoda Oya in Mabopitiya
This steel bridge over the Gurugoda Oya lies in the Niloluwa village in Mabopitiya in Kegalle District. The bridge has been built in the Government Factory by a British engineer named E. C. Davies in 1897. This engineer has been instrumental in building number of bridges in Sri Lanka during this time.
The bridge had been neglected and dilapidated and until it was repaired in 2005 by the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council at a cost of about LKR 500,000. The bridge was short cut to remote villages such as Udabogala, Udovita, Kammellawatta, Nelligoda and Hikgoda. However due to poor quality of the repair, the bridge was again in a unusable condition by 2012. This 125 year old bridge was declared a protected archaeological monument and in around 2014, it was repaired again by the Department of Archaeology. Currently this is in a good condition.
Traveling through Avissawella, you need to travel for 44km though Ruwanwella, Bulathkohupitiya and Alawathura to the site. Either way, take the Mabopitiya Degalaeriya road (B599) and travel 500 meters to reach the Archaeology board indicating the bridge location.
