Palippotana Megalithic Burial Site

Tucked away in the interior of Sri Lanka’s North Central Province, the unassuming village of Palippotana is home to a archaeological discovery that predates recorded kingdoms. Unearthed in 2020 by the Department of Archaeology at Rajarata University, the Palippotana Megalithic Burial Site has exposed 81 burial sites.

At first glance, the site may resemble a random scatter of stones and soil, but closer inspection reveals a purposefully designed burial ground. Excavations uncovered a variety of grave types, including rectangular cist graves sealed with large stone slabs, rare square cists without capstones, and an exceptionally uncommon form—parallel double orthostats—documented for the first time in Sri Lanka. These architectural forms provide insights into spiritual traditions and regional practices dating back nearly two millennia.

Beneath the capstones, archaeologists found an array of artifacts—pottery, beads, and metal implements. Many of the ceramic pieces, especially those in black and red ware, appear to have been used as ritual offerings. The presence of glass and quartz beads, copper cosmetic sticks, and iron tools points to a community well-versed in craftsmanship, trade, and funerary rites designed to assist the deceased in their passage to the next world.

Some capstones were also marked with small cup-shaped carvings, arranged in deliberate patterns. These cup-marks may have held offerings or functioned as symbolic elements. Their association with burial structures suggests a rich set of beliefs and ceremonial customs, possibly tied to cosmological views held by the community.

Surrounded by fertile farmland and rolling terrain, the site’s location seems to reflect more than mere convenience—it evokes a sense of connection between land and life. Natural features such as caves, rock shelters, and seasonal streams would have supplied water, refuge, and spiritual meaning.

Artifacts such as beads found at Palippotana bear resemblance to those from early Indian sites, suggesting contact through trade or cultural exchange. The presence of copper and iron objects also indicates a high level of metallurgical knowledge, further demonstrating that this community was part of a broader South Asian network of interaction.

What makes Palippotana particularly distinctive is the discovery of the double orthostat burial structure—a form never before professionally excavated in Sri Lanka. While comparable examples exist in the Monaragala region, this site marks a significant contribution to our understanding of the island’s megalithic heritage, potentially reshaping how burial architecture is interpreted across regions.

Beyond the burial structures, the wider landscape shows signs of sustained habitation, including evidence of agriculture and ancient irrigation systems. Man-made tanks and earthen dams not only supported the living but were intricately linked to the ritual world of the dead, binding everyday life with spiritual practice.
