Pallaththuchenai Archaeological Ruins in Kiran (කිරාන් පල්ලත්තුචෙනෛ පුරාවිද්‍යා නටබුන්)

Located near the Lawwada Wewa spillway in Pallaththuchenai, this site features Anuradhapura-period building remains with seven standing and eight fallen stone pillars. The area contains abundant pottery sherds, though recent cultivation has damaged the ancient structures.

The Pallaththuchenai ruins of a building with stone pillars are located within the Grāma Niladhāri Division of Perillaveli (209), in the Divisional Secretariat Division of Kōralai Pattu South (Kiran).

Access Route

From Kiran Junction, travel via Pulipanchakal along Kudumbimalai Road to 5th Junction. Turn right towards Kakkalacholai Junction. At the junction, turn left, pass through Pallaththuchenai, and turn right near “Baba Kadai” (Baba’s Shop). Continue for approximately 1 km to reach the site, which is located near the spillway of Lawwada Wewa (Lawwada Reservior).

Historical Background

The site contains structures exhibiting architectural and construction features characteristic of the Anuradhapura period.

Location and Nature of Archaeological Evidence

Building sites featuring stone pillars have been identified within a chena land/cultivation area. Approximately seven standing pillars rise about 0.61 meters (2 feet) above the ground surface, while around eight fallen pillar fragments are also present.

Abundant clay pottery sherds have been found among the earth mounds excavated from a canal cut through the land. Approximately 100 meters from the main building site containing the stone pillars, another pillar is located. A further similar pillar is found in a paddy field approximately 200 metres southeast of that location.

It appears that recent agricultural activities carried out on this land have caused considerable damage to the ancient structures that once stood at the site.
