Mahavilachchiya, surrounded by the Wilpattu National Park just 32 kilometres away from the sacred city of Anuradhapura, is an agricultural village on the Anuradhapura Mannar –Road.
Having passed the eight most sacred places of worship, Sambuddha Shrawakaramaya at Lolugasweva and the entrance road to ancient Thanthirimale Rajamaha Viharaya, you can enter the borders of Mahavilachchiya Division.
Mahavilachchiya is a colony established with 500 families. Fifty years back almost all early settlers depended on farming for their livelihood.
Today, Pemaduwa the major village in Mahavilachchiya colony is a flourishing rural town. Pemaduwa is an area of historical significance. During the reign of King Devanampiyathissa, Sangamiththa Therani, on her way to Anuradhapura, is said to have rested in this area for a while and kept the sapling of the Sri Maha Bodhi in a ‘Maduwa’ (a make-shift hut) and allowed the villagers to worship. As a result, this area became to be known as ‘Pemaduwa’.
