This archaeological site lies in the village of Periyakunchikulam of Periyakunchikulam GS division in Kunchikulam Divisional Secretariat. To reach this site, travel 45 km on the Medawachchiya-Mannar road up to Kunchikulam junction. This lies 1.6 km before the Madhu junction. Turn left towards the better-known Kunchikulama Hanging Bridge over Malwathu Oya of the British era.
Travel further down this jungle road for 1.7 km passing the Malwathu Oya and the ruins of this stupa are found 200 meters westward inside the jungle of Periyaweli. However, this road is not accessible during heavy rains as Malwathu Oya foods the road network.
The stupa is dilapidated and now looks like a mound of earth. The stupa mound is 12 meters in diameter and 3 meters high. Recently treasure hunters have dug an 8×5 meter hole at the top to a depth of 5 meters of the stupa in search of treasures. No measures to protect this ancient stupa have been taken by any authority so far. Based on the archaeological evidence, the stupa could be dated to the Anuradhapura period.
