The Ramakele Stupa is part of the Ramakele Mahanaga Pabbatha Viharaya near Sigiriya. Inscriptions and references found in the Sigiri graffiti identify this complex as Mahanapaw Viharaya. The stupa is believed to have been constructed during the reign of either King Kashyapa I (477–495 CE) or King Moggallana I (495–512 CE).
Early Excavations
Archaeological excavations carried out in 1910 revealed that treasure hunters had already plundered the site. A vertical shaft had been dug from the top of the stupa, and two relic chambers had been looted, and their contents removed, suggesting that the stupa may have originally enshrined valuable or sacred relics.
Discovery of a Third Relic Chamber
Fortunately, a third relic chamber was discovered beneath the second, sealed by a Sri Pathula Gala (a carved stone symbolizing the Buddha’s footprint). Within this chamber, archaeologists found a finely carved stone model of Maha Meru Parwathaya, the mythical cosmic mountain in Buddhist cosmology. Several ancient coins and gemstones—missed by the looters—were also recovered. The replica of Maha Meru Parwathaya is now housed at the National Museum in Colombo. (Bell, 1914, p. 545)
Current State of the Stupa
Today, only a portion of the bubble-shaped body of the stupa remains, featuring three concentric pesavalalu (molded rings). The stupa has a diameter of approximately 28 meters (92 feet).
Image House and Additional Architectural Elements
Within the surrounding forest, the most significant remaining structure is the image house. Twelve stone pillars, each about 0.45 metres (1.5 feet) in height, still stand. It is believed that the structure originally included 32 pillars arranged in a layout similar to image houses found at Menikdena, located approximately 32 kilometres (20 miles) away. A heavily weathered moonstone made of dolomite was also discovered at the site (Devendra, 1951).
Location
To reach the stupa, take the road from Inamaluwa to Sigiriya (on the Dambulla–Habarana Road). The stupa is located approximately 1 km before Sigiriya, on the right-hand side, about 50 meters into the jungle.
