Kurunegala district is strewn with ancient Buddhist temples with most going back to the pre-Christian era. Most of these temples in various states of despair had been gone through facelifts during the Kandyan Era thus today all these temples show architectural characteristics of the Kandyan Era.
Rankirimada Rajamaha Viharaya is such an ancient temple lying in the Arankele area close to the Arankele Monastery. Most of the buildings of the temple are built underneath ancient drip ledge caves. Ruins of the ancient temple can be seen scattered around the temple. A Sri Pathul Gala at the temple silently witnesses that this site has a history going back beyond the 2nd Century. Granite Sandakada pahanas, lamps and carvings can be seen collected at a few caves of the site.
