Baddegama Wawulagala Shri Shailakutarama Purana Gallen Viharaya is an ancient cave temple preserved by the department of Archaeology on the Hikkaduwa – Baddegama Road.
Taking the Baddegama Road from Hikkaduwa town ( also the connecting road to the southern expressway) and traveling about 8 km you will come across the standard board installed by the Department of Archaeology directing to Shailakutarama Purana Gallen Viharaya.
Traveling 150 meters on this narrow road you will come across an impressive ancient granite wall holding up earth from slipping on the road.
Climbing up a few granite steps to the top of the platform held by the granite block wall, will take you this ancient temple premises. The temple premises is scattered large boulders on a uneven ground. On to the left is one such large bolder where the ancient cave temple lies. Climbing a flight of stairs along the bolder will take you to the ancient cave temple where a reclining Buddha statue takes the center ground.
The cave is covered in murals but most of these are fading. The roof surface of the cave is painted with lotus flowers which seems to have been re painted recently.
At the top of the bolder which creates the cave lies the ancient stupa. Climbing further 3 flights of stairs around the bolder will bring you the stupa with barely enough space to walk around but gives you a eye catching view of the surrounding area.
At the foot of a granite pillar which probably made some decades ago lies pieces of some ancient pillars of the temple.
