Muthukandiya is a village in the Monaragala District of Sri Lanka’s Uva Province, located near the town of Siyambalanduwa. It is best known for the Muthukandiya Wewa Reservoir, which was formed by damming the Meeyal Oya.

Tangalmandiya Viharaya stands on the eastern border of the Muthukandiya Wewa Reservoir and is built upon the remains of an ancient Buddhist monastery belonging to the old Rohana Kingdom. The ruins of a small stupa survive on one side of the temple. For many years, the structure was hidden beneath thick creepers and vegetation, appearing as nothing more than a natural mound. The only visible hint of its presence was a plain moonstone positioned before a flight of stone steps with balustrades. In 2024, a new stupa was constructed, enclosing the ancient mound.

At the entrance, a row of short granite pillars marks the remains of an old building. Based on the uniform height of the pillars, this structure may have been a Tampita Viharaya built during the Kandyan period. Several stone flower altars and additional stone artifacts are also scattered across the temple premises.

Tangalmandiya Viharaya can be reached by traveling 6.6 kilometers (4.1 miles) along the Siyambalanduwa–Ampara road to Muthukandiya Junction, then taking the road leading to the Muthukandiya Wewa Reservoir. The temple is situated just beyond the reservoir embankment.
