Thalakiriyawa Tampita Viharaya also known as “Thalkiriyawa Purana Viharaya” is an ancient tampita temple in Mathale on the small village of Thalkiriyawa on the Galewela Road.
Tampita Vihara (which means Temple of Pillars) architecture belongs to the Kandyan era, where the image house is held above the ground level by granite pillars. The number of pillars depends on the size of the image house starting from 6 and going up to about 20 as in Nagarukharamaya in Pahala Baladora, Kurunegala district.
A grid of wooden or rock beams was placed on these pillars and thick wooden floorboards were placed on top of these. Most image houses were made of wattle and daub with narrow verandahs around the building.
The Tampita viharaya at Thalakiriyawa is a small image house neglected with time, with one horizontal beam now supported by a stack of clay tiles. The clay Buddha statues of the temple belonging to the Kandyan era were also broken by treasure hunters but these statues have been restored by the Department of Archaeology to their original state.
