It remains unclear whether these ruins fall within the Kuchchaveli or Gomarankadawala Divisional Secretariat, but they lie just off the Gomarankadawala–Thiriyaya road, beside the Maha Alankulama Wewa. To reach the Maha Alankulama Archaeological Site, travel past Mailawewa village in Gomarankadawala toward Thiriyaya. On the left, turn onto the track leading to the tank and follow it for about one kilometer. From there, trek roughly 500 meters north into the forest to find the scattered remains.

Bricks strewn across the clearing point to construction either in the Anuradhapura or Polonnaruwa period. Sadly, centuries of sun, rain, and human interference have reduced much of the original masonry to fragments.

In the heart of what was once a stupa—or at least a substantial brick structure—a crude trench bears witness to treasure hunters’ exploits. Roughly three feet wide, three and a half feet long, and two feet deep, this unauthorized hole has partially refilled over time, suggesting it was dug long ago and then abandoned.

A short distance south of the truncated brick mound stand several small stone pillars—each about two feet tall and one foot wide—clustered together as if marking an entrance or sanctified spot. Farther off, near a stream, a rocky outcrop reveals five shallow kovu (trough) cavities carved into the stone. Though heavily eroded, these features confirm that this forest enclave once supported a thriving monastic or ritual complex.
