Thotagamuwa Subadrarama Purana Viharaya is a temple that reflects an intriguing blend of traditional and colonial influences, both in its architecture and artistic expression. Located just about 500 meters inland from the Galle Road near Peraliya.
The temple itself was built in the 19th century CE, during a time when British colonial rule was deeply embedded in Sri Lanka’s coastal regions. As a result, many of the structures exhibit characteristics from that era. Among the older components of the temple are the image house, stupa, library (pothgula), and a monks’ residence. The monks’ quarters are believed to have been constructed approximately a century ago, while the library dates back to around 1935.
One of the most distinctive features of the temple is the image house, which consists of an inner chamber and an outer chamber. Though its paintings are primarily executed in the Kandyan artistic style, they are unmistakably influenced by European motifs and details. This fusion is especially visible in the British royal crest painted above the doorway, featuring the face of Queen Victoria, who reigned from 1837 CE. The crest also bears the date Buddhist Era 2431, corresponding to 1888 CE.
In the murals within the image house, the colonial imprint becomes even more apparent. Figures are shown in European-style clothing, including trousers, shoes, and elaborate hairstyles that contrast with traditional attire. The presence of horse-drawn carriages in the artwork further emphasizes this transitional period in Sri Lankan cultural history. While the overall color palette and compositional structure maintain the feel of classic Kandyan frescoes, subtle shifts in tone and detail reveal a clear influence from the colonial aesthetic.
Thotagamuwa Subadrarama Purana Viharaya stands today not only as a place of worship but also as a testament to a time of cultural fusion. It offers visitors a rare glimpse into how traditional Buddhist temple art adapted—sometimes subtly, sometimes quite overtly—to the presence of foreign rule, creating a layered and historically rich experience.
