Padiyathalawa lies 32 kms away from Mahiyanganaya and 21 km away from Maha Oya town. Padiyathalawa is part of the ancient Bintenna which covered a large area up to Mahiyanganaya. During the times of Kandyan Kingdom, the Binetenna area belonged to the Kandyan Kingdom.

By 1819, the Bintenna area belonged to Badulla District. This place belonged to the Uva Province until 1833 and Bintennna was attached to the Eastern Province in 1833. In 1886, Bintenna was divided into two parts and shared between Uva Province and Eastern Province. Accordingly, the area west of Maduru-Oya was under Uva province and the part East from Maduru- Oya was under Easten province. East Bintenna or Mahaoya and Padiyathalawa were administered under Uva.

Until 1961, Bintenna (Maha Oya and Padiyathalawa) belonged to the Monaragala district. On 10th April 1961, the new Ampara District was established and Bintennna was attached to the Ampara District.

These archaeological remains of Wahawa lie very close to its Hot Water Spring. To reach this site you need to travel around 12.5 km deep into the villages through the village of Holike. Travelling towards the hot water well, you will see these ruins lying by the road, partially covered by shrub jungle just a few meters before the well.

What is visible above ground are broken pillar stumps from what appears to be two ancient buildings. a partially covered asana or flower altar and some unspecified stonework. However, the most interesting artefact found at this site is the top part of a broken pillar. The sump is with the pillar head carved from the same stone. This pillar would have been part of a magnificent building that existed thousands of years ago.
