Beddagana Wetland Park is a serene urban oasis in Kotte, perfect for nature enthusiasts. This biodiversity hotspot features scenic boardwalks through lush marshes, offering sightings of migratory birds, butterflies, and dragonflies. Its tranquil atmosphere and beautiful views of Diyawanna Lake make it a refreshing escape from Colombo’s bustle.

Opened in 2016, Beddagana Wetland Park is one of the newest ecological attractions located just outside Colombo, within the administrative capital of Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte. Spanning 18 hectares, the park is nestled within the wetlands surrounding Diyawanna Oya Lake, which itself is part of the larger Diyawanna Oya Flood Plains Wildlife Sanctuary, declared by the Department of Wildlife Conservation in 1985.

This urban nature park was developed not only as a recreational space but also as an important ecological buffer zone. It plays a vital role in flood control, offers a cooling effect to the surrounding urban environment, and serves as a refuge for both flora and fauna.

Rich Biodiversity in the Heart of the City

Beddagana Wetland Park is home to a variety of endemic bird species and other wildlife native to Sri Lanka and the Asian Wetland ecosystems. Among the fauna found here are butterflies, dragonflies, and various mammals, making it a hotspot for biodiversity enthusiasts.

The park’s vegetation includes numerous wetland floral species, some of which are endemic or listed as threatened. The park is a popular stopover for a variety of migrant birds during its season from August to April each year.

Walking Trails and Viewing Experiences

The park has two trails. One trail borders the Diyawanna Oya lake, and most of the trail is on a raised platform with wooden planks laid across. A butterfly path and a Duck Pond can be found on this path. It ends on a timber deck facing Diyawanna Oya.

The second path is a forest trail that goes through a wetland forest. The path is through a shaded forest patch, and you can have a good view of the migratory birds on the migratory bird path on this trail.

The best time to visit the park is in the early morning hours, just after sunrise, when the environment is cool and tranquil. During this time, the park comes alive with activity—birds emerge from their nests, calling and foraging for food, while other wildlife are more likely to be seen before the heat of the day sets in. The soft morning light also offers excellent conditions for photography, particularly for capturing the rich biodiversity and scenic beauty.
