Closenberg House, perched on the edge of Galle Harbour, was constructed over 150 years ago by Captain F. Bayley, a longtime agent of the P&O Company. Designed to mimic the appearance of a ship, complete with grills adorning its doors and windows, the house has since transformed into a renowned boutique hotel.
Closenberg Bay, with its stunning turquoise waters, was celebrated as one of the most picturesque locations in Galle during the 19th century, drawing bathers and surfers to its shores. The site of Closenberg House was originally a small islet connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway. Over the centuries, this islet merged seamlessly with the mainland, erasing any visible signs of its former isolation.
Originally named “Villa Marina,” Closenberg House was constructed in 1861 by Captain Francis Bayley, the head of the P&O Company, during a time when Galle was a major port of call. Locals affectionately referred to the site as “Bayley Kanda” (Bayley’s Hill).
Captain Bayley’s wife, Lucy Matilda (nee Atkinson), an artist, adorned the house and its gardens with an array of ferns and blooms collected from the P&O trade route, spanning from Calcutta to the Suez. The Bayleys resided in the house until 1871, when Captain Bayley sold it to the P&O Company for use as the official residence of its agent. Despite the sale, Bayley continued to live there until the company relocated its offices to Colombo (Peiris, 1959).
In 1889, the house was purchased by Simon Perera Abeywardena, the son-in-law of Charles Henry de Soysa, who renamed the mansion “Closenberg.” In 1965, the Abeywardena family converted the residence into a boutique hotel. The original four main rooms were transformed into guest accommodations, while the former bachelors’ quarters were reconfigured into a kitchen. By 1983, an additional sixteen rooms facing the sea were added, further enhancing the hotel’s charm (Peiris, 1959).
