Today the the small house in which Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Thero was born has been preserved as an archaeological monument.
Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Thero (1827–1911) was a prominent Buddhist monk, scholar, and social reformer who played a crucial role in the Buddhist revival movement during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in Hikkaduwa, a coastal town in southern Sri Lanka, he was ordained at an early age and devoted his life to preserving and propagating Buddhist teachings and culture.
Sri Sumangala Thero was renowned for his exceptional scholarship, particularly in Pali, Sanskrit, and Sinhala, and he made significant contributions to Buddhist literature. He was instrumental in founding the Vidyodaya Pirivena (now the University of Sri Jayewardenepura), one of the most prestigious centres for Buddhist education in Sri Lanka.
A key figure in the Buddhist revival movement, Sri Sumangala Thero worked to counteract the decline of Buddhism in Sri Lanka caused by colonial influence and the rise of Christian missionary activities. He collaborated with other leaders, such as Anagarika Dharmapala, to restore the Buddhist identity of the island. His efforts included organizing Buddhist conventions, reviving traditional rituals, and publishing Buddhist texts.
