Digampitiya Purana Tampita Viharaya is an ancient temple built during the Kandyan Era and lies about 7 km away from the Kurunegala town. The temple can be reached through Thorayaya from the Dambulla road or through Mallawapitiya from Kandy road. To reach the temple from Kandy road, take the Ridigama road from Mallawapitiya (3.5 km) and travel for 3 km. Then take the narrow Kuda Kawana road to left. A name board advertising the 80 riyan buddha statue at the Digampitiya Purana Tampita Viharaya. After 500 meters another narrow road to right with a small name board will direct you to the temple.

Traveling from Dambulla road go pass Badagamuwa Forest and upto Thorayaya and take the Kuda Kawana road to right. This is the other end of this road. After 2.5 km you will come across a small gravel road to the left. No significant land mark exists at this turn. Travel on this gravel road for 250 meters and you will come across the narrow road with the small name board to the left after passing a paddy field.

A Tampita Viharaya is a structure built on a wooden platform which rests on number of stone stumps usually 3-4 feet tall. The roof is held by a structure built of timber and the walls are generally made of wattle and daub. Walls inside the chamber is more or less always covered in paintings drawn mainly in Kandyan style.

The Tampita Viharaya at the Digampitiya Purana Viharaya was declared as an protected archaeological site on 22 November 2002 by gazette number 1264 and again in 2008.
