Katupitiya Sri Nagarukkaramaya Purana Viharaya is an ancient Buddhist temple notable for its Kandyan-era Tampita Viharaya. The temple is located approximately 100 meters off the Katupitiya junction, which lies on the Rambukkana – Dambokka road. It is situated about 11 km from Rambukkana and 9 km from Dambokka.
To reach the temple from Rambukkana, take the Dambokka road and travel for 11 km until you reach the Katupitiya junction. At the junction, take the narrow road heading towards the Sanasa Bank, and the temple will be found about 100 meters down this road.
A Tampita Viharaya is a distinctive architectural structure built on a wooden platform supported by several stone pillars, typically standing 3 to 4 feet high. The roof is held up by a timber framework, and the walls are generally constructed using wattle and daub. The interior walls of the chamber within are often decorated with paintings, primarily in the Kandyan artistic style.
The Tampita Viharaya at Katupitiya Sri Nagarukkaramaya Purana Viharaya was declared a protected archaeological monument by the Gazette dated 22nd November 2002 as below;
The ancient Tampita Vihara situated within the premises of Sri Nagharukkaramaya in the village of Katupitiya, of the Divisional Secretary’s Division of Mallawapitiya of Kurunegala District in the North Western Province.
