Katupitiya Sri Nagarukkaramaya Purana Viharaya is an ancient Buddhist temple with a Tampita Viharaya belonging to the Kandyan era. The temple lies about 100 meters off Katupitiya junction lying on Rambukkana – Dambokka road. From Rambukkana the distance is about 11 km and from Dambokka, 9km. From Rambukkana take the Dambokka road for 11 km to reach the Katupitiya junction. From Katupitiya take the narrow road towards the Sanasa Bank and the temple lies about 100 meters down this road.
A Tampita Viharaya is a structure built on a wooden platform which rests on number of stone stumps usually 3-4 feet tall. The roof is held by a structure built of timber and the walls are generally made of wattle and daub. Walls inside the chamber is more or less always covered in paintings drawn mainly in Kandyan style.
The Tampita Viharaya at Katupitiya Sri Nagarukkaramaya Purana Viharaya was declared as a protected archaeological monument by the gazette dated 22nd November 2002.
