The archaeological ruins are located on the right bank of a tributary of the Maduru Oya.

Historical Background

The architectural features of the structures found at this site, together with the artifacts scattered across the area, indicate that the remains belong to the Early Anuradhapura Period.

Location, Measurements, and Nature of Archaeological Evidence

The site is situated within a villu area covering approximately 0.8 hectares (2 acres). It lies to the north of a tributary of the Maduru Oya. The archaeological remains are scattered across an area of approximately 500 square meters (5,382 sq ft).

Among the ruins, which have been heavily damaged by treasure hunters, is a mound that is likely the remains of an ancient stupa. At present, the mound stands approximately 1 meter (3.3 ft) high and measures about 6 meters (19.7 ft) in diameter. Its centre contains a deep pit excavated by treasure hunters. Bricks removed during these illicit excavations are scattered around the mound, together with a few stone pillars.

Approximately 25 meters (82 ft) northeast of the stupa mound, a considerable number of stone pillars, stone slabs, and fragments of other stone artifacts have been gathered together. Four stone pillar bases have also been identified among the remains scattered throughout this area. In addition, fragments of stone pillars and pieces of clay pottery are dispersed across the site.

The archaeological evidence clearly indicates that this location was once the site of a Buddhist monastery dating to the Early Anuradhapura Period.
