The Anurādhapura-period Kavethradapathnai site (no. 1) in Kiran features a 25-square-meter rectangular building foundation. Hidden deep in the forest, the ruined structure contains a 5×4 grid of 1-meter-tall stone pillars surrounded by scattered pottery and ancient stone fragments.

The Kavethradapathnai Archaeological Site (no. 1) is located in the village of Muruthtthanai, within the Grāma Niladhāri Division of Muruthtthanai 209-A, in the Divisional Secretariat Division of Kōrale Pattu South (Kiran).

Access Route

From Kiran Junction, travel along the Thureiyadi Road. At Pulipanchakal Junction, turn right and continue through the Napaththawil Wewa reservoir area to reach the indigenous village of Muruthtthanai. Proceed beyond the village for approximately 20 km (12.4 miles) until reaching a three-way junction with the road leading to Kudumbimalai. Go about 500 meters along the Kudumbimalai road and into the forest through footpaths from the right side road to reach the site. Reaching the location is difficult as there is no defined road system.

Historical Background

The architectural characteristics of the structures at this site, particularly the stone pillars, exhibit features typical of the Anuradhapura period and indicate that the building was constructed during that era.

Location and Nature of Archaeological Evidence

Archaeological remains distributed across an area of approximately 25 square meters (270 square feet) reveal the foundations of a rectangular building. These ruined structures were likely associated with archaeological sites situated on nearby rocky outcrops.

Approximately four stone pillars are partially buried in the ground, while the remaining pillars survive largely intact. The structure appears to have been built using a grid arrangement of five rows by four rows of pillars. Each pillar stands approximately 1 meter (3.3 feet) in height. Fragments of pottery and various stone remains are scattered throughout the site, providing further evidence of past human activity.

Geographical Coordinates

The exact location of the site is as follows:

North Latitude: 7° 52′ 38.7″ N
East Longitude: 81° 24′ 35.0″ E
