Located in Kudumbimalai, this prehistoric Megalithic site (c. 400 BCE) features cairn burials near paddy fields north of the mountain. Though damaged by land prep and treasure hunters, scattered granite slabs, quartz pebbles, and broken pottery confirm ancient burial practices.
This Megalithic Cairn Burial Site is located in Kudumbimalai village, within the Grāma Niladhāri Division of Kudumbimalai (209-D), in the Divisional Secretariat Division of Kōralai Pattu South (Kiran).
Access Route
From Kiran Junction, travel along Thoppigala Road via Pulipanchakal to Kudumbimalai village. Near the preschool building, turn onto Suravanachcholai Road on the right and continue for approximately 3 km. The archaeological remains are located near the paddy field encountered along this road.
Historical Background
The site is a burial ground belonging to the prehistoric/protohistoric Megalithic culture.
Site Location and Nature of Archaeological Evidence
The site is located near a paddy field to the north of the Kudumbimalai mountain range. The archaeological evidence has been damaged as a result of the development of the surrounding paddy land. Numerous flat granite stone slabs positioned close to one another are widely distributed throughout the site.
Recent destructive activities have exposed the remains of a particular type of pottery that had been buried underground. Excavations carried out by treasure hunters have resulted in the destruction of these clay vessels, leaving fragments scattered extensively within the excavated pits and across the ground surface.
Round quartz stones are also found abundantly throughout the site. The archaeological evidence indicates that cairn burials constructed using quartz pebbles during the prehistoric/protohistoric period, around 400 BCE, were established at this location.
