As the sun begins to set, its crimson rays gently illuminate the sea and brush the rocky hilltop where a stupa quietly rests, casting a serene and picturesque view across the Kumburupiddi beach. This elevated outcrop, the site of a stupa believed to date back to the early Anuradhapura period, stands exposed to the salty breeze blowing in from the Indian Ocean.

The site is located on the Kumburupiddi Red Rocks point, along Nilaveli Road in Trincomalee.

The stupa mound lies on one side of a wide, rocky summit that stretches towards the sea. While there is no definitive information identifying the king or era responsible for its construction, its coastal location and the historical presence of ancient maritime Viharas in the surrounding area suggest that the brick remains may indeed belong to a stupa from that period.

Sadly, the stupa has been destroyed by treasure hunters who have dug a large pit at its center—about four and a half feet in diameter and roughly 15 feet deep—removing many bricks in the process. These bricks, along with other scattered stones, now lie strewn around the mound. No other significant ruins are visible nearby.

Although the Department of Archaeology has marked the site’s boundaries with concrete pillars, parts of the stupa’s grounds have been enclosed with wire fencing, seemingly to designate private land. About 100 meters downhill from the stupa, near the shoreline, a building resembling a tourist lodge has been erected by a local animal trader. Venerable Keppetiyawela Aranavihaaree Thero has pointed out that this is an illegal structure and confirmed that complaints have been filed with the Kuchchaveli Police. However, the unauthorized construction continues to stand without any intervention.
