Marassana Gal Ambalama

Set quietly along the main Thalatuoya–Marassana road, directly opposite the Marassana Divisional Hospital, stands a lesser-known but practical ambalama made entirely of granite. Unlike the more famous wooden Marassana Ambalama nestled deeper in the village, this structure was clearly built with functionality in mind.

Simple and sturdy, the ambalama is designed for rest and shelter rather than beauty. Three wide openings at the back and sides let in the fresh mountain air, while the front features a straightforward entrance and a half-height stone wall. The open layout ensures that even on the hottest days, the inside remains cool and breezy.

It is believed that this ambalama was built when the hospital was established, providing a much-needed resting place for visitors, patients’ families, and weary travelers passing through the area.

How to Get There:
From Kandy, head out along the Haragama Road and then turn onto the Thalatuoya Road toward Marassana. The stone ambalama stands prominently across from the hospital. From here, you can also take a small byroad that winds its way through scenic paddy fields and farmlands, eventually bringing you to the charming wooden Marassana Ambalama—a hidden gem beloved by locals and history enthusiasts alike.
