Most of the Ambalamas—traditional wayside resting places—found across Sri Lanka today were built during the Kandyan Kingdom. Sadly, many of these historic structures have fallen into disrepair, while some have disappeared entirely due to neglect. Still, several have been preserved through the efforts of the Department of Archaeology.

To visit the Waththewa Ambalama, travel along the Colombo–Kandy road. At Hingula, turn under the arch leading to the Dadimunna Devalaya and continue along Waththewa Road. After approximately 1.2 kilometers, the Ambalama appears, standing in front of a picturesque stretch of paddy fields.

The Waththewa Ambalama is a modest, square-shaped structure. Built on a small raised platform, its walls stand about 2.5 feet high. From each corner rises a cylindrical pillar that supports the simple roof. The current structure appears to be a recent reconstruction, made using cement. It remains uncertain whether a more ancient Ambalama once stood at this site and was later replaced.
