Matale Hathtota Amuna Ruins—Carved Stone Slab

Amidst the dense forest of the Laggala Hathtota Amuna area, a vast collection of ancient ruins is deteriorating rapidly. These remains are scattered across an expanse of 7 to 8 acres in the Nagolla region, which falls under the Akarahadiya Grama Niladhari Division. To reach the site, we trekked approximately four kilometers through thick jungle.

The ruins lie on land that had once been used for chena cultivation. Among the remains, we observed hundreds of stone pillars, each about 3 to 3.5 feet tall; several massive stone beams roughly 15 feet in length; a partial relic chamber of a stupa, indicating the structure’s former presence; a fragment believed to be from a medicinal trough; the foundation of an ancient building; and two stone slabs marked with quarrying signs. Scattered among the ruins are also fragments of old bricks

According to ancient chronicles, this area served as a religious hub during the reigns of King Aggabodhi II and King Walagamba.

Ven. Yatawatte Ratanasara Thero, Chief Incumbent of Leloya Sri Niketharama Viharaya, remarked, “Laggala has a long history, dating back to the era of King Rawana.”

“Many industries, palaces, and temples were constructed here by kings of the Anuradhapura period—rulers like Aggabodhi II, Valagamba, and Maha Parakramabahu.”

But now, these historical sites are buried beneath thick jungle and reduced to dust,” said Provincial Council Member D. E. M. Kapilathna Banda. “We must take steps to uncover and protect this heritage. Laggala is of immense historical value.”

There’s even a belief that the name of our nation, Lakdiva, originated from Laggala. This forgotten history must be brought to light. If those who care for this land unite, we can rediscover and preserve the story hidden in these ruins.
