Moon Plains is a breathtaking agricultural and ecological zone offering a 360-degree mountain view of Nuwara Eliya. A thrilling jeep safari through this “Mini World’s End” reveals the peaks of Piduruthalagala and Kirigalpotta. Visitors can spot elk and diverse bird species across these expansive, misty high-altitude plains.
Moon Plains (also known as Sandatanne, Sandagalatanne) is the latest attraction open to the public in Nuwara Eliya. This area is now classified as an Agricultural and Environmental Tourism Zone by the municipality of Nuwara Eliya and was declared open on 25th March 2014.
The plains of vast, undulating grasslands and gently rolling hills are located just 7 kilometers off Nuwara Eliya town and are accessed by passing the Government Potato Seed Farm at Sita Eliya.
The Main Highlight: The Mini World’s End
The primary draw of Moon Plains is its spectacular viewpoint, often referred to as the ‘Mini World’s End‘. After a short journey through the plains, you arrive at a cliff edge that offers an uninterrupted, sweeping 360-degree panorama.
From this vantage point, the sheer scale of the surrounding mountains is awe-inspiring. On a clear day, you can identify some of Sri Lanka’s highest peaks, including Pidurutalagala (the tallest), Hakgala, Great Western, and even the distant silhouette of Sri Pada (Adam’s Peak). The landscape below is a vibrant tapestry of greens – tea estates, vegetable plots, patches of forest, and meandering streams. The feeling of standing there, with the chilly wind in your hair and the entire hill country seemingly spread out before you, is truly unforgettable.
Wildlife at Moon Plains
The plains host a variety of wildlife, including Elk, wild buffalo, deer, and numerous bird species. While leopards are known to visit this area, sightings are uncommon.

The cost of hiring this jeep is set differently for locals and foreign visitors. Each jeep has a capacity of 6 people, offering an opportunity to share the expense if you can find others to join your ride. Keep in mind that while possible, arranging a shared ride typically requires visitors to coordinate among themselves, as drivers may actively discourage it to increase their hires.
You are not allowed to walk the distance.
