The Nuwara Eliya Post Office is among the city’s most iconic and historic landmarks, located in the heart of what is often referred to as ‘Little England.’ Recognized as an archaeological monument under the protection of the Department of Archaeology, this elegant colonial-era building is one of the most photographed attractions in the area, especially beloved by visiting foreign tourists.
Constructed by the government’s Public Works Department and completed in 1894 (Bingham, 1921), the post office stands as one of the oldest in the country. Designed in classic Victorian style, the red-brick building features a distinct clock tower on one end and showcases a glimpse of old-world Ceylon of the colonial era.
In 2012, the top floor of the post office was transformed into a holiday bungalow, adding a unique layer of modern use to its historic structure. However, controversy followed in 2017 when the government proposed selling the Nuwara Eliya, Kandy, and Galle Fort post offices to private developers with the intent of converting them into hotels. This plan faced fierce opposition from postal workers, who staged a three-day strike that ultimately halted the sale, defending these national monuments from commercial exploitation.
Despite previous resistance, the Gotabhaya Rajapaksha government in 2023, after the Rajapaksha-led economic collapse of the country, once again attempted to sell the Nuwara Eliya post office building for conversion into a hotel. This move continued to face widespread opposition, not only from citizens but also from tourists who value its historical and architectural significance.
Only time will tell the fate of this grand heritage building.
