Hidden within a small forest patch between sprawling sugarcane fields lies Padivettu Malai, where ancient rock-cut steps rise abruptly from the stone. This forgotten monastic site, overlooked and unprotected, preserves echoes of a lost past waiting to be uncovered before time soon completely erases it.

Two kilometers (1.24 miles) south of the Deegavapi Stupa and eight kilometers (4.97 miles) west of Akkaraipattu lies a small rocky outcrop known locally as Padivettu Malai. The Tamil name combines three words: Padi (steps or stairs), Vettu (cut, carved, or hewn) and Malai (hill or mountain). True to its name, one of the larger rocks features a steep, deeply carved flight of steps leading upward. This site lies in a small patch of forest between a vast sugarcane field and a road.

This site lies in a small patch of forest between a vast sugarcane field, and these carefully hewn steps do not extend to ground level but end several meters (a few feet) above it, suggesting the presence of a wooden bridge or structure in ancient times. At the base of the rock sits a small cave. The area today forms a compact forest patch bordered by extensive sugarcane fields.

No other visible ruins remain, as most would have been destroyed during agricultural development. However, undiscovered remains may still lie beneath the small patch of forest if proper excavations are undertaken. Despite its significance as an ancient monastic site, the location has been overlooked by the responsible authorities.

It may only be a matter of time before the steps themselves are damaged or lost due to ongoing efforts aimed at erasing Buddhist heritage in the eastern and northern regions.
