Alawwa Paramaulla Purana Tampita Viharaya

Alawwa Paramaulla Purana Viharaya is an ancient Buddhist temple 2.5 km off Alawwa with a Tampita Viharaya belonging to the Kandyan era. The temple lies about 10 km from Ambepussa and 11 km off Polgahawela. To reach the temple from Ambepussa, travel 7.3 km on the Kuruegala road to reach Alawwa. From the Alawwa junction, take the Giriulla road and travel for 2.7 km until you reach the ancient Ambalama under the historic “Geta Kumbuk” tree of Paramaulla. The access road to the temple is right in front of this tree.

A Tampita Viharaya is a structure built on a wooden platform which rests on number of stone stumps usually 3-4 feet tall. The roof is held by a structure built of timber and the walls are generally made of wattle and daub. Walls inside the chamber is more or less always covered in paintings drawn mainly in Kandyan style.

The Tampita Viharaya at Paramaulla Purana Viharaya is comparatively small and is built on six granite pillars. The Full width and the length of the Tampita Viharaya is taken up by the image house. The roof is extended at the front and is held by two additional wooden pillars at the front. The roof is thatched with flat clay tiles typical of buildings of Kandyan era.

This Tampita Viharaya was declated as an protected archaeological momument by the gazette dated 23 February 2007 and has been restored in 2012.
