The Anurādhapura-period Pullakkadu School ruins in Kiran, Batticaloa comprise a 100-square-meter complex disrupted by recent constructions. The heavily disturbed site features scattered stone slabs, grinding stones, and stone pillars, some of which have been integrated into the school premises.

Archaeological Ruins at Pullakkadu School are located in the village of Periyaveram within the Grāma Niladhāri Division of Pulakadu 209 C, in the Divisional Secretariat Division of Kōrale Pattu South (Kiran) of Batticaloa District.

Access Route

From Kiran Junction, travel approximately 4 km (2.5 miles) along Thureiyadi Road. Then turn right onto Pondukalchenai Road and continue for a further 5 km (3.1 miles) to reach Pullakkadu School.

Historical Background

Although only a limited number of archaeological remains survive today, the existing evidence confirms that an ancient Buddhist monastery dating to the Anurādhapura period once stood at this location.

Location and Nature of Archaeological Evidence

Archaeological remains are scattered over an area extending approximately 100 square meters around Pullakkadu School and the adjoining kovil. Recent construction activities have altered the original context of the ancient structures, making it difficult to reconstruct the site’s original layout.

Various archaeological remains, including stone pillars, stone slabs, and grinding stones, are scattered throughout the area. These artifacts have been displaced from their original locations, indicating significant disturbance to the site over time.

Several stone pillars have even been reused within the premises of Pullakkadu School. In addition, fragments of stone pillars found at various points along the road between Pullakkadu and Periyaveram are likely to have originated from these ancient structures and were probably removed from their original positions.

Despite the extensive disturbance caused by recent developments, the surviving architectural fragments provide clear evidence that this area once formed part of an ancient Buddhist monastic complex dating to the Anurādhapura period. The dispersed stone remains found both within the school grounds and along the surrounding roads further suggest that the original monastery was considerably larger than the archaeological remains visible today.
