The early Anurādhapura-period Periyaveram ruins with evidence of ancient settlements in Kiran, Batticaloa are located on private property and nearby paddy fields past Pulākādu School. The site features displaced stone pillar fragments and red-and-black ware pottery scattered across 50 square meters.

Periyaveram Archaeological Site with Ancient Settlements is located in the village of Periyaveram within the Grāma Niladhāri Division of Pulākādu 209 C, in the Divisional Secretariat Division of Kōrale Pattu South (Kiran) of Batticaloa District.

Access Route

From Kiran Junction, travel approximately 4 km (2.5 miles) along Thureiyadi Road. Then turn right onto Pondukalchenai Road and continue for a further 5 km (3.1 miles) to reach Pulākādu School. Travel another 50 meters passing the school to reach the private residence of Keedanapillai Ramanathan on the left. The ruins are scattered on his property and in the paddy fields near his land.

Historical Background

Although only a limited number of archaeological remains survive today, the existing evidence confirms that an ancient Buddhist monastery dating to the early Anurādhapura period once stood at this location.

Location and Nature of Archaeological Evidence

Fragments of red-and-black ware pottery are scattered across an area of approximately 50 m² (538.2 sq ft), indicating the presence of ancient human activity at the site.

In addition to the pottery, fragments of stone pillars can be observed both within this area and in the adjacent paddy fields. These displaced architectural elements suggest the former existence of substantial ancient structures, the remains of which have become dispersed over time.
