Archaeological Site near Sivashakthi School in Kiran

The Anurādhapura-period Murukkaṉthivu ruins in Kiran, Batticaloa are located near Sivashakthi School and the Murugan Kovil. The site features an abundant scattering of black-and-red ware pottery alongside two ancient buildings: one with three standing 1-meter stone pillars, and another with 11 stone pillars (2 meters high) that has recently been modified into a Hindu worship platform.

The archaeological site near Sivashakthi School is located in the village of Murukkaṉthivu, within the Grāma Niladhāri Division of Pulākādu 209 C, in the Divisional Secretariat Division of Kōrale Pattu South (Kiran), Batticaloa District.

Access Route

From Kiran Junction, travel approximately 7 km (4.3 miles) to the village of Perampadithivu. From there, continue for another 4 km (2.5 miles) to Murukkaṉthivu Sivashakthi School. The archaeological ruins are located near the Murugan Kovil, near the Sivashakthi School.

Historical Background

The abundant black-and-red ware pottery, together with ancient clay roof tiles and the surviving archaeological remains, indicates that the site dates to the Anurādhapura period.

Location and Nature of Archaeological Evidence

The ruins of an ancient building are situated approximately 100 m (328 ft) southwest of the Murugan Kovil, adjacent to Sivashakthi School. Three stone pillars, each approximately 1 m (3.3 ft) in height, remain in their original positions.

Approximately 50 m (164 ft) northeast of this location are the remains of another ancient building. At this site, 11 stone pillars, each about 2 m (6.6 ft) high, can still be identified. However, a platform for the worship of Hindu deities has recently been constructed by Hindu devotees at this site.

Black-and-red ware pottery sherds are also found in abundance throughout the site.
