Historical Background
Although only a limited number of archaeological remains survive today, the existing evidence confirms that an ancient stone-pillared structure dating to the Anurādhapura period once stood at this location.
Location and Archaeological Evidence
The surviving remains consist of the foundations of an ancient building, including 13 short stone pillars that remain in situ. These pillars are arranged in a rectangular ground plan and exhibit the characteristic post-base layout commonly employed in ancient constructions.
The architectural arrangement of the pillars suggests that the structure was supported by a systematic grid of stone column bases, a construction method frequently associated with religious and monastic buildings of the Anurādhapura period. Although little of the superstructure survives, the remaining foundation provides valuable evidence of the original building’s plan and construction.
