The Thalapathkulama Wewa Reservoir, located near the border of the North Central and North Eastern Provinces in the Parangi Wadiya area of the Anuradhapura-Horowpothana region, is a remarkable example of Anuradhapura’s sophisticated hydraulic engineering.
Access to the reservoir requires a challenging journey: turning off from the Halmitiya Junction on the Anuradhapura-Horowpothana road, one must travel approximately 1.5 hours by tractor along an unpaved path, followed by a two-hour trek through water several inches deep.
The most notable archaeological feature here is the stone carving of the Naga and Nagin (serpent king and queen), adorned with seven cobra hoods, located on an elevated rock near the reservoir. This serves as a marker of the ancient reservoir. Additionally, remnants of a fortified queen’s residence and a viewing pavilion-like structure in excellent preservation can be observed.
The Thalapathkulama Wewa Reservoir is a significant water body in the cluster of irrigation reservoirs it belongs to which includes other reservoirs such as Pansal Wewa, Ali Wewa, Ihala Kurundu Wewa, Pahala Kurundu Wewa, Kukulkulama Wewa, Rambawa Wewa, and Moragoda Wewa.
