Usgala Swarnabimbarama Rajamaha Viharaya is located in the Kobeigane Divisional Secretariat division of the Kurunegala District. This temple’s origins are attributed to King Kirthi Sri Rajasinhe, who reigned from 1747 to 1781 during the Kandyan Kingdom period.
A two-story image house believed to have been built by King Kirthi Sri Rajasinhe still stands at the temple today. The upper floor walls are adorned with decorative clay figures of lions, Bahirawas (dwarfs or demi-gods often depicted in temple architecture), and serpents. Although the Department of Archaeology recently renovated the roof of this building, the aforementioned clay figures are reported to be deteriorating.
Certain structures within the Swarnabimbarama Purana Vihara premises have been officially recognized and declared as protected archaeological monuments. This designation, made by a gazette issued on July 24th, 2009, includes the Tampita Image House (an image house built on stone piles), the Theva Mandapaya (offering hall), and a wall within the temple grounds. These are specifically located within the No. 376, Kanoyaya Kahatavilagedera Grama Niladhari Division in the Panduwasnuwara East Divisional Secretariat’s Division, Kurunegala District.
