On the great southern coastal road, just before reaching Ambalanthota, a signboard marked Ussangoda easily catches the attention of travelers. Turning toward the sea and driving for a few minutes, followed by a short uphill climb, leads to a remarkable and mysterious landscape that remains only partially explored.
The terrain that unfolds before the visitor appears both unusual and striking. The wide plateau stretching in every direction contains very few tall trees and is largely covered with short grass or moss. In several places, clearly defined circular patches of vegetation can be seen scattered across the plain, although these too lack large trees. The soil has a distinctive dark red color, giving the entire landscape an appearance reminiscent of the surface of Mars. Because of this unusual environment, the area has long been associated with strange natural phenomena and mystical traditions, giving rise to numerous legends and stories.
History and Legends of Ussangoda
One explanation sometimes proposed for the barren character of the soil is that a meteoroid may have struck this location in ancient times. Such an impact is believed by some to account for the unusual vegetation patterns and the poor fertility of the ground.
Local folklore, however, links the site to the legendary king Ravana. According to this tradition, Ussangoda was the place where the king’s flying machine, the Pushpaka Vimana, crashed after his defeat. The scorched earth and reddish soil of the area are sometimes interpreted as physical traces of this mythological event, adding a mysterious aura to the site.
Flora and Fauna
Despite the harsh appearance of the terrain, the plains of Ussangoda support a surprising range of life. According to residents living in the vicinity, the area attracts many small wild animals and numerous species of birds. It is also believed to contain several rare medicinal plants that thrive in the unusual soil conditions.
Large mammals are rarely observed in this landscape, although birds and butterflies are frequently seen moving across the open plains.
View of the Sea
A narrow track from the plateau leads directly toward the coast. Following this path eventually brings the visitor to the edge of a dramatic red-earth cliff. From this vantage point, a sweeping view opens over miles of sandy shoreline and the vast ocean beyond.
The sea below displays deep turquoise waters, powerful blue waves, and lines of frothy white foam breaking along the beach.
Visiting Ussangoda National Park : Ticket Prices / Entrance Fees
Unlike most protected areas in the country, Ussangoda National Park does not charge an entrance fee for either local or foreign visitors. The area remains largely open and minimally regulated, making it an accessible destination for hiking, sightseeing, and photography.
Visitors can park their vehicles near the entrance and explore the plains on foot. The landscape is particularly popular during sunset, when the reddish earth and coastal horizon create a dramatic natural setting.
