These ruins are located in the village of Keridamadu in the Mannakandal Grama Niladhari division of the Oddusuddan Divisional Secretariat in the Mullaitivu District. It is believed that the ancient village of Kelindamaduwa became known as Keridamadu in the Tamil language. “Kelinda” refers to a type of flowering tree with red or white blossoms.
Ruins of a building from the Anuradhapura era were discovered at this site. The site features sculpted torsos of life-sized Buddha and Avalokiteshvara statues carved from limestone.
Additionally, a large circular stone flower pedestal found at this site has been moved to a Hindu kovil ground at the Mannakandal junction. The ruins of the building include five stone pillars. The central part of the building has been excavated by treasure hunters, leaving behind scattered fragments of ancient bricks, tiles, and pottery shards. Among these fragments are remnants believed to be parts of statues.
About 25 meters east of the building, there is a pond, now dried up, with a depth of about 0.5 meters and a diameter of approximately 20 meters. Behind the building, there is an embankment about 8 meters long.
The Avalokiteshvara statue is intricately carved with decorative adornments. The remaining torso is 69 cm high and 16 cm wide, with only the lower part preserved. This piece is believed to date back to the 8th-10th centuries CE.
The surviving part of the Buddha statue is approximately 140 cm tall, though the head, hands, and feet are missing. These two statues are displayed at the Keridamadu archaeological site.
The stone flower pedestal currently at the Hindu kovil ground in Mannakandal is concluded to belong to the Anuradhapura era. It has a diameter of 122 cm and a thickness of 22.5 cm.
Travelling approximately 23 kilometres on the Oddusuddan to Pudukuduirippu road, and then turning right at the Mannakandal junction and travelling about 500 meters on a gravel road through the forest, leads to these ruins.
The location is marked on the Google map below according to the above directions. According to the GIS mapping by the Department of Archaeology, the site is approximately 4 kilometres before the mentioned point on the Oddusuddan to Pudukuduirippu road https://goo.gl/maps/KsoXTJ1biyYvsMoEA. There is a small military outpost at Mannakandal junction. Most of the forested areas are under military surveillance, so route details and permission can be obtained from them.
