Nelligala International Buddhist Centre

Imagine standing on a peaceful hilltop, feeling the cool breeze on your face, and looking out over breathtaking views of misty mountains, wide valleys, and faraway cities. This is what you’ll experience at the Nelligala International Buddhist Centre — a newer spiritual destination in Sri Lanka that has quickly become popular among the Buddhist Community and international tourists visiting Kandy.

While Kandy is known for the sacred Temple of the Tooth and its busy streets, Nelligala offers a quieter and more peaceful experience just a short drive away. Located on the 750-meter-high mountain top of Nelligala, near Muruthalawa, it gives visitors amazing views and is a perfect stop for both pilgrims and travelers seeking tranquility and stunning scenery.

Once you arrive at the temple, you’ll notice the temple’s unique style. Unlike traditional ancient rock temples, Nelligala has a clean, modern design with open spaces that highlight the beautiful views around it. Large golden Buddha statues in different poses are placed throughout the temple, shining brightly under the sun and adding a feeling of peace and majesty to the open-air area. At the center, there is also a stunning stupa where people come to pay their respects. The temple’s design blends naturally with the surroundings, creating a calm and peaceful space ideal for meditation and quiet reflection.

The Breathtaking Views

The panoramic views are without a doubt the highlight of visiting Nelligala. Standing atop the hill, you’re surrounded by sweeping 360-degree scenery that stretches as far as the eye can see. On a clear day, the sight is truly spectacular—you can spot the famous Hantana mountain range, the distant peaks of the Knuckles Range, the winding Mahaweli River, and vast stretches of green paddy fields and forests fading into the horizon. If you look carefully, you might even glimpse the city of Kandy nestled far below.

For an even more unforgettable experience, visit during sunrise or sunset. The sky bursts into a dazzling display of colours, bathing the landscape and temple in a golden glow that perfectly matches Nelligala’s “golden” spirit. In the early mornings, a cool mist often blankets the hills, giving the whole scene a dreamlike, magical quality.

Entrance to Nelligala International Buddhist Centre is completely free for both locals and tourists. These contributions help support the maintenance and upkeep of the temple grounds, ensuring that this serene place remains beautiful for all who visit.

Getting to Nelligala Temple International Buddhist Centre

Just 13 kilometers from Kandy Town, Nelligala is an ideal getaway if you have 2–3 hours free and want to enjoy breathtaking views and a peaceful atmosphere. Even though the distance is relatively short, you should allow at least one hour for travel, as the road winds through hills and can sometimes be busy.

The most convenient way to reach Nelligala is by tuk-tuk. You can easily hire one from Kandy Town. It’s best to negotiate a round-trip fare in advance, making sure to include about 30–60 minutes for sightseeing at the temple. This way, the driver can wait for you while you explore without any rush.

If you plan to spend more time at Nelligala — perhaps to meditate, take in the views, or visit during the beautiful sunrise or sunset hours — you can instead arrange for the driver to drop you off and return to pick you up later. Most tuk-tuk drivers are happy to accommodate this if you agree on a time and price beforehand.

Another option, if you’re feeling adventurous, is to rent a scooter or take a private car, which gives you more flexibility to explore nearby areas as well. However, keep in mind that the last stretch of the road becomes quite steep, so a tuk-tuk or a vehicle with good power is often the safer choice.
