Pansal Kanda dates back to the 2nd century BCE, a period when Buddhism thrived across ancient Sri Lanka. This era saw the rise of magnificent monasteries and stupas throughout the island, many of which still stand as testaments to a deeply spiritual legacy.
Location and Setting
The site is located atop a serene hill at the edge of Janakapura, the last Sinhala settlement along the Anuradhapura–Mullaitivu Road passing through the Welioya region. From its elevated position, the hill offers sweeping views of the surrounding forested plains, creating an atmosphere of tranquility and reverence.
The Ancient Stupa and Monastic Ruins
At the heart of Pansal Kanda lies an ancient stupa, now weathered by time but still radiating its sacred presence. Constructed using kabok (laterite) stones, the stupa’s lower portion is built entirely from kabok, while the upper section is made of brick. Archaeologists believe it to be as old as the stupa currently preserved at Kurundi Viharaya in Mullaitivu.
Scattered around the hill are the stone pillars and foundation blocks of ancient monastic structures, hinting at a once-thriving Buddhist complex. Among these remains, a simple stone seat—beautifully preserved in its original form—adds a quiet sense of intimacy to the site.
A Sanctuary Amidst the Wilderness
Encircling the hill is a dense forest teeming with wildlife, including elephants, bears, and leopards. This natural environment enriches the spiritual ambiance of Pansal Kanda, evoking the peaceful solitude sought by ancient monks for meditation and reflection. The forest also acts as a natural guardian, protecting the sacred hill from human encroachment.
Preservation and Future Prospects
Given its archaeological and ecological significance, Pansal Kanda deserves urgent conservation attention. A comprehensive survey could reveal more about the site’s historical importance, while restoration efforts could help preserve the stupa and surrounding ruins. Establishing a protected heritage zone would safeguard both the cultural and environmental integrity of the area.
With careful planning, Pansal Kanda could become not only an important archaeological site but also a tranquil destination for pilgrims and travelers, offering a glimpse into Sri Lanka’s early Buddhist civilization harmoniously coexisting with nature.
