Uduwawala is a small township located between Katuagastota and Medawala in the Kandy District. At the Uduwawala Junction, along the Katuagastota–Medawala road, stands a small ancient ambalama (wayside rest), which today also functions partially as a bus stop.
The Uduwawala Ambalama is a square structure built of brick and mortar. Its roof is supported by seven brick pillars and two wooden pillars, the latter also serving as the doorway frame. The brick pillars are cylindrical and taper towards the top. The roof follows the traditional hip-roof design commonly associated with Kandyan-period ambalamas and is covered with semi-cylindrical clay tiles (Sinhala ulu).
However, several of these original architectural features have been altered during restoration work. The two wooden pillars have been removed, and the original tapered form of the brick pillars is no longer preserved in its authentic shape.
The seating arrangement within the ambalama reflects the class-based social structure of the Kandyan period. The benches are constructed at varying heights, allowing people of different social ranks to sit together according to custom.
In recognition of its historical and cultural value, this ambalama was declared a protected archaeological monument in 2009.

Travel Directions to Uduwawala Ambalama
Kandy can be reached from Colombo via the old Colombo-Kandy road (option 1), which is scenic but heavily congested, especially on Fridays and Sundays. However, the new Central Expressway (option 2) has opened up a new route, which is longer but less cumbersome.
